Awesome March Fishing in Fort Myers, Pine Island, and Sanibel

Capt. Dave Hoke

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing is getter better every day here in Southwest Florida. Redfish were the main focus this week on my charters and we were very successful in catching a lot of quality fish. Although I did not target trout on any of my charters, I did receive some good reports from other captains who did.
I started things off Monday fishing with a new client from up North. We met at the dock at 8:00 am and idled out of the marina. We were greeted by picture perfect weather conditions. It was glass calm, sunny, and warm. I got on the platform and poled my boat up to the edge of a pothole that was holding close to 100 redfish on the low tide that morning. We immediately began hooking redfish but the fish kept spitting the hook. It was not the angler, it was just bad luck. We ended up catching a few quality redfish out of the school before the wind picked up and the fish pushed and scattered onto the flat.

My afternoon trip was with a couple regulars of mine who are spoiled and used to catching boatloads of snook with me this time of year. I told them the snook bite was still not right so we opted to go redfishing instead. We put our first line in the water at 2:40 pm and were hooked up to our first redfish at 2:42 pm. We ended up catching 8 more nice redfish and a 25 inch trout over the course of the evening and had a lot of fun doing so.

Tuesday I fished with one of my good clients and a guest of his from Tennessee. We pushed away from the dock at 9:00 am and began our quest to catch beautiful Pine Island redfish. We bounced around a few spots and ended up catching 10 very nice quality redfish along with a couple nice trout. We had a great time, shared lots of laughs, and looked forward to fishing again on Wednesday.

Wednesday we began the morning with goals to surpass our 10 redfish that we had caught on Tuesday. We started the morning out right by catching a few reds and a trout at our first stop. We bounced around a few more spots and ended up catching 14 redfish and a few really nice trout. It was a great two days with great people.

Thursday I fished with a new client who just recently bought a house here in Fort Myers. We were greeted with 25 mph winds and overcast conditions. We started the morning by redfishing and were successful as we caught 10 redfish in the first part of the day along with a couple nice trout. We then switched gears and went snapper fishing. I pulled up to some hard bottom in 6 feet of water and we caught snapper every cast until the trip ended. They had a blast!
The weather has canceled my trips for the next two days so it looks like fishing is over for me this week. I have a busy week scheduled next week and the weather look like it is going to cooperate so expect an exciting report from me then.

Tight lines until next time,
