Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report
We had another week of beautiful weather and as anticipated the fishing was spectacular. We had great tides all week and the fish really responded well to it. I had a full week of charters this week and I was fortunate to fish with a lot of really neat people. We boated over 80 redfish this week and I expect that number to improve as water temperatures creep over 70 degrees.
I did some scouting before my afternoon trip on Saturday and I located numerous groups of Snook that I plan to target early next week. The trout fishing continues to be hot throughout northern Pine Island Sound. We also have been catching a lot of Pompano, Bluefish, Mackeral, and of course Ladyfish. Cobia and Sharks also hit the deck this week. The bait of choice this week was shrimp on a 2/0 Owner Live Bait hook with 20 lb Flourocarbon Leader under a Cajun Thunder Rattling Cork. On higher tides we used live shrimp on 2/0 Owner Live Bait hooks with a ½ oz sliding egg sinkers to catch redfish near mangrove island across Pine Island Sound.
Bait is beginning to show up in North Pine Island Sound. Look for Pelicans diving in 2-5 feet of water and you should be able to located quality bait. I still prefer shrimp over whitebait but I expect that change over the next week. With water temperatures rising and the weather improving, fishing is only going to get better over the next couple of weeks.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Dave Hoke
