Boca Grande to Punta Gorda fishing report

Capt. Scott Hughes
February 14, 2017
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing and the weather the past two months has been really good. This has been the warmest winter I can remember. With the warm weather has been light winds which is unusual for winter.

Snook: Snook are not usually a fish that I target during the winter months but this year has been good for snook. The warm weather has kept lots of snook on the flats. I've been catching snook up to 26 inches in the potholes on low tide. I've been mostly catching them on DOA Cal baits fished on a jighead. I've also been catching them on shrimp worked on the bottom. The feeder creeks have held lots of smaller snook.

Redfish: Redfishing this winter has not been as good as usual but I'm still catching a few each day. The colder the better for the reds. Low tide has been better for me when targeting redfish.

Speckled trout: Trout is a staple winter catch in our area for winter. this year has been excellent for trout. All areas are holding good numbers of keeper trout this winter. Soft plastics and shrimp have produced the most fish. Cut bait is catching the larger trout over 24 inches.

Flounder: This winter hasn't been great for flounder but lately I've been catching a few keepers. Shrimp on a jig has been working the best.

Fort Myers Fishing Forecast:

Baitfish are starting to show up. That means that targeting larger snook is just around the corner. It also means that big game fish like cobia, sharks and mackerel are going to be moving into the area soon. Expect a few big game reports with catches like tarpon and bull redfish to start popping up in the reports within the next month.

Target Species:

snook, redfish, speckled tout

More Fishing Reports:

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
