Cooler Water And Air Temperatures Heat Up The Fishing

Capt. Gary Clark
October 4, 2011
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 10/1/2011

Cooler water and air temperatures have heated up the fishing especially redfish. There have been good numbers of lower slot fish that we have been catching all year being joined by larger schools of above slot fish.

Pictured above is George Samenuck with one of several lower slot fish he caught on Saturday. On the higher tides these fish are on just about every oysterbar near the passes. This red was caught free linning shinners on a 4/0 circle hook.

George and his friend Rich also caught several jacks in the same areas on shinners.

Here"s Rich with another of the redfish, we did spend some time in the morning in a group of several tarpon that were feeding on small silversides. Unfortunatley they did not want to eat the shinners or pinfish we threw at them.
Neither George or Rich have caught a tarpon but after watching them jumping around the schools of bait they are going to be back in May to get one. I have seen this happen many times where the tarpon are so zoned in on that particular size bait that they won"t eat anything else. There still should be more chances in the next few weeks to see more tarpon before they migrate south.
