Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

What a great time of year to be on the water! We finally got our first real break in the heat of summer and the fish reacted positively, as expected. This pattern should continue for the next week and the winds should start to let down over the weekend.
The fishing was good just about anywhere in Estero Bay. Most notable was the bump up in both the bite and size of sheepshead. Seems they are starting to react to the weather change and a few big ones are moving into their usual winter haunts. We've been working deep cuts near oyster bars with a small jig heads tipped with live shrimp.
Sea trout are also moving onto the grass flats in about 3 to 4 feet of water. Setting up drifts using live shrimp under popping corks has produced the best results. If the wind is blowing you might need to add a little weight to your rig or cast down wind and reel after each pop.
Redfish were a bit more spread out this week so we had to move from spot to spot to get on them. We'll usually find a couple in each location and then have to move on. Cut ladyfish for bait is the ticket, but they'll also go after live shrimp, either free lined or on jigs.
The spanish mackerel were making a push for the beaches early in the week, but the winds came up and that makes it difficult to get out unless you have a good sized boat. There's also been some tarpon passing by on their way south to their wintering spots.
