Fort Myers Fishing Is Great Early Top Water Trout & Tarpon

Capt. Eric Anderson
July 26, 2014
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Just about every morning at first light there is a fantastic top water bite for Spec Trout and Tarpon. Look for the trout to be on the deeper areas of a flat, and the best areas will be close to deep water. Most of the trout will retreat to deep water after the sun gets high enough to start warming the shallow water on the flats. This usually happens around 10am most mornings.

Look for Tarpon rolling in channels and in any area over about 7ft deep that has some current. These fish will smack Zara Spooks (spook Jr's)and POP-R's for about the first hour of the morning. You never know when a school will just appear so keep a rod rigged with a topwater just in case.

Here's a client from last week with her first tarpon, and she can cross Tarpon off her bucket list. Get out and catch some trout and always be looking for those Tarpon.
