Big Ft Myers Snook Moving Into The Estero Bay Backcountry

Capt. Eric Anderson
August 10, 2014
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Typical summer passing thunderstorms have had a positive effect on the Snook fishing. In areas that get good runoff, the decreased salinity always attracts Snook and Tarpon. They love brackish water and will stay in those areas until the salinity goes back up.

There has been an excellent top water bite in these areas at first light that lasts about 30 minutes, you will see Snook popping bait and the Tarpon will be rolling. Once that bite turns off go to twitch baits, flukes, and spoons. Gold spoons have been producing a bunch of Snook the last few days, and are especially effective in heavily stained water. I don't use live bait because it doesn't allow my clients to rapidly cover mangrove shorelines looking active biters. One bait that comes close to live bait is the 3D soft plastic shrimp from Savage gear, they are so lifelike its hard to believe its a plastic bait. I can tell you that Snook and Redfish absolutely pound them. They just introduced a 3D crab at ICAST last month and it is just as lifelike. It won best of show and its easy to see why, you can watch video of these baits on youtube.

There has been a steady increase in the number of larger Snook showing up in the back country the last 2 weeks as they are coming back in from the beaches. The photo below is a 40" Snook caught this week on a gold spoon pitched to the mangroves and twitched back to the boat. A very nice fish and definitely a happy fisherman!
