A Long Awaited Warmup of Air and Water Temperatures

Capt. Gary Clark
February 6, 2011
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 2/6/2011

A long awaited warmup of air and water temperatures this week gave us a needed break from the cold winter. Water in the upper 60"s and air in the 70"s can make a huge difference this time of year, a break from just trout, redfish and ladyfish. Jacks and mackerel showing up signals we may be headed to spring type conditions that increases the variety of species we catch.

Its nice to hear the drag screaming out that a 8lb. jack can give you on light tackle, spanish mackerel are also showing up that indicates bait although small is showing up in the bay.If this trend continues we should see bluefish and pompano join in future reports. Sub 60 degree water just makes our fish lazy or just not bite at all at times. I have been seeing bigger slot trout showing up in most of there normal winter spots.

Pothole fishing on the low incomming tides and transitions off the flats are your beat bet. Oysterbars and mangrove shorelines on higher water will produce redfish.

My go to baits with warmer water are a white redfish magic on a 1/4 oz. jighead prsented slowly near the bottom. Plugs are also working well, a suspending Rapala or when the fish are being agressive a skitter walk. Always keep the old regular live shrimp under a popping cork handy for those hard to catch days.

Weather looks good for the upcoming week, a couple of weak fronts nothing dramatic, get out and fish!
