Opening Day Grouper Slam! GiddyUp!!

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
April 2, 2010
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

OK, I know what you're probably thinking. "This Dude never gives a good report." Hold the presses Jack because I'm about to make you hyperventilate!

My charter yesterday consisted of 2 very wealthy young pro baseball players here for Spring Training. Bu the way, they asked me about my fave team and when I said "Do you really want to know the answer to that question" they said "Yes, tell us." I proceeded to tell them the American League sucks because the flippin pitcher can hit batters and not have to bat himself. Believe it or not they actually agreed with me. Think about it. They are pitchers and who is easier to strike-out than a pitcher? Anyway...

So, here's what happened. We trolled our asses off for about 1 Hour 21 minutes and nothing. I'm switching lures, changing speeds, going deeper, going more shallow, ect. I noticed the amount of sand in the water column was quite considerable. I call this "Stirred-Up" kinda like you would put Half-Half in your coffee and stir it (yuk). So, finally I put on (Via an excellent LOOP KNOT with no swivel) a MirrOLure 111HR-HP. The color is Hot Pink. As Charlie Daniels would say "Son, they wouldn't leave it alone." On the other rod, I tried the MirrOlure 111HR-ECMAC. I couldn't believe any lure could outperform the ECMAC but given the water conditions, clarity, current speed, tides to Ebb, ect it was the day for Hot Pink or 111MR-HP. This is the second in this paragraph whereby I have given you the exact lure specs so buy yourself some of these bad boys.

Swivels often cause bubbles when trolling and Kindfish will cut you off faster than an angry wife so GiddyUp doesn't use swivels.
Bimini Twist to Suregons Knot to Loop Knot. I used Yo-Zuri Hybrid Line and Pink Fluro Leader in 60LB Test yesterday. My goal is to get the lure running 1-2Ft off the bottom which should tell you I was fishing in 27Ft of water and cleaned house.

We ate fresh grouper after the charter. I signed 2 of Ron Pressley's books for them and they kept tipping until I pulled my hand back and said "Oh, that's enough. The meals at the old folks home are getting expensive." I have asked for 2 autographs in my life. M-Ali and Joe DiMaggio.

The grouper are out there. We kept 2 fish as allowed. What a blowski grouper regs are. The Commercials Jerkoffs can keep an 18" Red Grouper but my charter customers must catch a 20".
I need to be on the Board to change things and bring about fairness. Those sitting on the Board now SUCK

Fort Myers Fishing Forecast:

Excellent. No Tarpon yet but I predict next week. Water temp yesterday was a high of 67. After today (Fri/Sat/Sun) water temps will go to 75 easily. Brace for Tarpon Season!

Target Species:

Grouper/King Macks/Tarpon
