Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hot, hot, hot. That pretty much describes the weather and the fishing. The Gulf is alive with bait and that has brought in the spanish mackerel, bluefish and other bait chasers along the coast. The forecast is for more of the same this coming week.
Top notch pompano fishing in 18 to 20 feet of water in the Gulf was the big story this week. Used small jigs tipped with shrimp to score on limits on three different trips. There are also lots of spanish mackerel and trout in the same area. The near shore rock piles are producing keeper snapper along with a few small grouper. Small offerings of cut bait on weighted circle hook rigs is your best bet.
If line pulling action is what you are looking for, there are lots of good size sharks around. We've gotten a nice mix of silkies, blacktips, bulls and hammerheads using cut ladyfish and threadfin herrings and the hammer's are running in the 6 to 9 foot range in length.
Redfish and trout are biting in Estero Bay on live shrimp under corks on the inbound tides. Look for schools of tiny bait fish on the flats and work that area for best results. On the tide changes, move to the passes for trout, snapper, ladyfish, mackerel and more.
Here's a special Father's Day gift! Saltwater fishing licenses are NOT required for anyone this Saturday and Sunday (Father's Day Weekend) so take your Dad fishing! All slot limits and closed seasons still apply.
