Rain Cooled Water Makes Trout And Redfish Turn On

Capt. Gary Clark
August 23, 2011
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 8/23/2011

As in every August our water temperatures rise to near 90 degrees that can slow fishing. We have had several rain cooled days sometimes to or three in a row that last all day. I have had several brave folks that will fish in these conditions and in most cases they turn out to be the best fishing days of the week.

Redfish and trout have really been good on these days taking advantage of the cooler water to feed. Redfish on the higher water around mangrove shorelines or oysterbars have been eating almost everything, shinners either free linned or under a popping cork, pinfish and cut bait.

Trout have been best around the beaches and passes anywhere schools of bait can be found. I will usually find the bait, get away a bit and chum with shinners to get them going. Spanish mackerel almost always show up in these same areas.

With a strong storm comming to Florida"s east coast later in the week it appears that the army cour of enginers are dumping water from lake O changing the salinity levels in the mouth of the river. With this change there are less mangrove snappers and snook being caught now.
