Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
April 16, 2005
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Fishing is heating up but the constant winds ice it down. My Dad always said "March winds." He was a man of simple observations and "April winds" as well. It seems to be the same darn thing everyday. 20-30MPH Consistantly! Anyone, here's the scoop on the Fishing in and around Pine Island and a bonus Offshore Report.

Trout: Good Grief, the "Specs" are all over the place. 2.5 pounders are typical not unusual. 24-26" trout are being caught on larger lures. Try the power lines near Chino Island and the Grass Flats of Demere Key. Leave the life shrimp and the expensive prices at the bait shop. A D.O.A. under a Cajun Thunder works better. How? It seems as thought you don't pick up nuisance fish. The Sanibel Causeway flat is on fire. It has been trout year in years.

Snook: Everybody wants to bag their first snook but noone is willing to lose a little sleep to do it. A simple fact of life is snook bite at night. The first two docks at the entrance of Tarpon Bay off Sanibel is on fire. Big Handpicks work very well at night but white bait works better. A quick trip to Ft. Myers Beach will yield trophy snook. They may be found in and around the many marinas and docks.

Redfish? I am in a slump. RATA!

OFFSHORE IS ON FIRE WHEN THE SEAS ALLOW A VISIT. IT HAS NOT BEEN EASY OR AVAILABLE VERY OFTEN. LAST SUNDAY WE RAN TO 44FT DIRECTLY OF BIG CARLOS PASS AND SCORED KING MACKEREL TO 56LBS. THAT'S THE GOOD NEWS. THE BAD NEWS IS THAT WE ALL NEEDED DENTAL WORK AFTER THE BOAT RIDE FROM THE ROUGH CONDITIONS. HOW RUFF WAS IT? 4-7FT SEAS AND BUMPIE AS HECK.

NOT A WHOLE LOT OF TARPON HAVE SHOWED. THIS IS REALLY STARTING TO WORRY ME. "GIDDYUP"
