Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
May 14, 2005
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Southwest Florida is ON FIRE WITH TARPON, SNOOK, and REDFISH. It is hotter than the fox in the forrest fire (if you know the old saying). Tarpon are the big story so let's get going here and I'll give you the 411!!!

Tarpon: How about my Thursday Charter. Three anglers with 3 Tarpon on at the same time. That kind of chaos turns me on like seeing Julia Roberts or Nicole Kidman! (Cruise must be gay) The biggest of the trio was about 150LBS. I rumbled with him at the side of my boat for the longest 30 seconds of my life. You would think going mano y mano with a 150LB beast would not turn me on as much as it does but OH MY, what a fight it was. Tail slap to the side of my head and I was left dazed and confused. Couldn't stop laughing!

Bait can be found for these bad boys at "C" Span. Throw a Calusa 5/8's 10 or 12Ft net and you are cooking on gas around piling 11-14. Giant Choice Threads. Your leader is key to catching Tarpon. You MUST learn a Bimini Twist. It is a knot not a dance. Attach the Bimini to a 40 shock leader and then attach that to 80LB Yo-Zuri Flurocarbon. The Poons' just don't see that Yo-Zuri leader. (Heck, the Mangrove Snapper under my dock can't even see it as I catch them with just a leadhead!)

18-22FT off Knapp's Point is all you need to know about their 10/20 HOSS! GiddyUp!

Snook fishing is incredible. Go figure. It is catch and release time. The Beaches are cool early in the morning but the snook fishing is hot. If you are fishing from da beach and your feet get wet, you are going about things quite incorrectly. Get the sun to your back and stay 30ft minimum from the water. Wearing a pink or light blue shirt helps as well. Don't have red anything on. Those linesiders see red. Trust me!

Redfish? Oh yeah Baby! Hurt me! They are all over cut bait. Who cares about glamour except when it comes to women? Pinfish, ladyfish, bluefish, hell.... they just don't care. Attach a chunk to a leadhead and throw it out there. Start telling fishing lies, drink your fave beverage, and BAM you will get smoked around the Mangroves off Wofford Key. "GiddyUp"

PS: I gotta go fish. I don't have time for anymore hot scoop. Just remember this! "You can never get enough "GiddyUp"!!! Be safe and respectful out there. Go fish!!
