Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
January 17, 2006
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

How windy is it on Pine Island Sound? It is so windy that Dudes on windsurfers are passing my 24FT Bay Boat with 225 GiddyUps on the transom (in SC "The Good Ole' Boys call it a TRANDSOM. Heavy on the "D" that ain't there) Here what's happening in these here parts Partner!

Trout are without a doubt (damn I'm good) what it's all about in Pine Island Sound. Live shrimp fished on a cajun thunder makes life very easy. Big Trout 'should' be in the deeper holes but I have yet to find them in any quantity. ("Deeper Holes" are hereby defined as potholes and small channels) The fresh water runoff released by the Army Corps of Jerkoffs out of the Big "O" has ruined our grass beds. None of the g-beds in Pine Island Sound show signs of life. If you wanna score trout, troll for them and throw out a marker buoy when you score. The key to success is slowing down. It has taken me longer to reel in a "DOA" presentation than it has to make love to myself. If you are presenting a DOA Shrimp in less than 3-4 minutes, you ain't jerkin' it in right. As you know, lower water temps mean slower than my room temperature IQ. "GiddyUp"

Redfish: Slow applies to these tough guys as well. Capt. GiddyUp likes live pinfish bleeding and hurt (don't you hate my guts when I talk it the 3rd person) but "GiddyUp" has had much success with this move. For the Reds, I like the Oyster Bars on the incoming tide.

What oyster bars? Those which get covered by the tide when it floods. If you cannot find Pinfish, try some Berkeley Gulp Crab or Shrimp. Throw it out there, put the rod in the rod holder, and make some 1-900 calls on your cell. Smoking a nice cigar or eating anything are two other options. The scent from these baits amaze me. As a matter of fact, I have not smelt anything like them since visiting the Phillipines while in the US Marines! MAYDAY! This is known as "soaking baits on the bottom." It is a great thing to do if you are in a brand new relationship. "Hey Baby, wanna go soak some baits on the bottom." You'll knockem' dead with this cool approach.

Grouper Inshore: Ain't happenin' yet

Flounder: GiddyUp! Some nice flounder have been caught off Bunche Beach (not named after me). Try shrimp on jigheads made for bottom fishing. The correct type will have a flat bottom.

I'll be a featured Speaker at The Florida Sportsman Show in Ft. Myers Feb4-5th. If you are bored, pls come see me! GiddyUp!
