Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
March 9, 2006
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing is getting hotter than the fresh fox in the forrest fire and so are the obnoxious winds of March. If there is a month of more wind than March, enlighten me. Even on 20KT days, Gator Trout, Snook, and Pompano seem to be eager for a fight on light tackle.

Gator Trout: Pine Island Sound is holding some monsters. In years past, I have always liked the falling tide but this year the rising is producing. Oyster Bars and Grassflats around the Power Lines (South Matlacha as well) are where they are hangin' out. I love a great topwater lure early and the DOA later. DOA color should match the color of the real bait in the tanks. When the shrimp are reddish, you con't want to be buy Pearl. Capiche?

Yo-Zuri Suspending Lures and their new live bait plug have been producing some monsters. The Live Bait Series of lures feel soft and look like White Bait! Very cool and as a bonus, Snook are often fooled.

Snook are leaving the deeper canals for the shallows with the increased water temperatures. They are already on the beach but I like the Mangroves for the really big fish. Remember: A 35" Snook is illegal and will not taste as good as a 26". Don't be tempted. It is not worth it.

Pompano: My dog and I dine on this delight almost weekly. He likes them baked. It is the only fish I harvest. LB for LB they fight better than almost anything that swims. Check out the Toll Plaza Flats and Tarpon Bay. You will no doubt see the "24FT GiddyUp Boat" there.

Tripletail are everywhere out front. The wind guarantees their survival. Take you time and try to throw in FRONT OF THEM by 20-30FT and let the tide carry the bait to the T-Tail. Remember: If you wanna score some tail, you must not klunk them over the head with a bait. Skip it in if you have to but MORTAR Rounds spook them.

So, there it is. A dry and dull fishing report. I have been told my reports are getting "to political."

Well just hold your damn horses here! Think about how obnoxious I'll be as a new Board of Director of the FL Guide Assn. You havn't seen nothin' yet. Wait until they turn my bulldog butt loose on the wuss politicans in T-hasse! MAYDAY. AND WE WILL FIX THIS WATER RUNOFF ISSUE. BOOK IT~ "GiddyUp"
