Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
April 21, 2006
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

King Salmon are biting off the beaches! Just messin'with ya but everything else certainly seems to be. There is good news and bad news regarding bait to catch big fish. The Good News. Bait is everywhere. The Bad News. It is Pee Wee Herman in size. (Way small Dudes!)OK, ready for a serious report? I hope not but it will be the truth, whole truth, so help me Biggest Dude in da Universe.

Tarpon: "OH SWEET MERCY!" I'm certain when red headed women die they come back as tarpon. Poons' can be found along the beaches of Sanibel. How close are they? Few times is there an opportunity to catch a tarpon from the beach. On a recent scout trip, I was all set to try from terra ferma until I saw a 7FT Bull Shark swim right by my boat. MAYDAY! These fish are pure evil (like Newman on Seinfeld). Anchoring my boat and wading through that gully lost all appeal.

The key to catching the Tarpon is finding big bait. 2 Captains I respect immensely told me they ran for 2 HOURS just trying to find BIG BAIT. When I heard this it occurred to my peanut size brain to catch Spanish Macks and cut the head and tail off. "Fish the dog" as the Bubba's call it down shere. Ladyfish works as well. Live mullet would also be the bomb.

Snook: Believe it or not, Snook season is almost closed again. The FLIMIT(new word)is one fish and the one fish season is only days away from no fish. Nada, Zilch. Zip. And jail time if you can resist fried snook fingers.

Mackerel: Never ever have I ever seen so many Spanish.

Fill up a cooler with ice and go have some fun on light tackle. My Quantum Model 10 Catalyst is perfect for this application. These fish give you a great fight and are quite yummy if you ice then down pronto.

TRIPLETAIL: Who can afford to run for these anymore. Gas is 3.67 per gallon at the Marina. My charter business imposed a 50.00 gas surcharge when the price hit 2.00! What FNEXT (New Word)?? If you want to run for these great fish with me, slide me a cool 100.00 and we will "get er'done". There are still some big 3 tales out there. Thinking about anything with 3 tails makes me want to say "GIDDYUP"

PS: Don't tell anybody but Monster Snook can be caught drifting baits by the first couple of houses going into Tarpon Bay. Be smart. Wear your bulletproof vest!
