Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
May 30, 2006
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon Season has been an "Emotional Nightmare" for me and countless other Professional Saltwater Guides. The 2006 has been "Dr. Jekyl and Mr Hyde." When it is good, it is soooooo damn good but when it is bad it is kinda like going to a convent and all the penguins look like Angelina Jollie. It has been anything but usual slam dunk. Speaking of good looking women, have you seen the Nun on the cable TV? MAYDAY! Here's the 411 around these here parts partner.

Few times (maybe 2X) has a customer on a GiddyUp Charter pulled a move worthy of an autograph but step to the plate Mark "Grits" Bloodgood. "Grits" hooked this tarpon off the bow, the fish sets a world record high jump, head for stern, changes plans and goes under the boat, and exits the other side of the boat. When the fish went under the boat, it was time for "Grits" to pull off one of the coolest MOVES I've seen from a customer. "Grits" took my brabd new G-Loomis 10-22LB Spinning Rod with Quantum Cabo Model 40 and stuck the rod VERTICAL down into the water. This move (I believe to be alien to 98% to those who fish) saved the fish for a battle that exceeded 1Hour and 30ticks. This same Dude (Grits) had an epic battle on the exact same date last year that included a fish that took us from 23FT of water to me being on the bow yelling at swimmers of Knapp's Point to GANGWAY. (If you never spent in the USMC, God bless ya but G-WAY means get the hell out of the way). "Grits," Dad, and Brother fish with me every year and tarpon possess them. They are great guys and understand tarpon fishing.

Two days later, Jim and Johnny Taylor could not miss a fish. Tarpon were everywhere and fighting for our big thread herrings.

Today at Boca Grande Pass, it was tough goings. The plan was to fish The Pass and then fish the beaches.

Tarpon were all over BGP but we failed to hook-up. Searched the beach, nothing. Came inside to search on of my favorite bars, nada. What was there over the last three days was "Outta Here" today.

Tomorrow is another day but tough days like today work on Guides who really give a Rat's ass. Maybe the Ugly Nun put a curse on me. One thing is for sure. Before I go to bed tonight, I'm gonna find Sister Ugly on Comcast, say "I'm sorry" and think about what it would be like to kiss her good night. MAYDAY!

PS Going to check out the Permit action tomorrow. Break out the Yo-Zuri Hybrid Invisible Line. Wonder if that Nun would fish with me if I sent her an invite? Yeah Baby Yeah!!!
