Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's time to go trout fishing!

I don't usually target trout for most of the year, but this is one of the times of year that I actually look forward to catching them. All trout fishing has been catch and release for the past two months and snook fishing has been closed since before Christmas. January and Feburary provides some of the easiest and best trout fishng of the year. The only hard part about winter trout fishing is locating the fish. Once you have found them then your almost always going to catch a limit or two or three.

Trout: Catch and release trout fishing the past two weeks has been fantastic. We have fishing bars and creek mouths with soft plastics and scoring up to 50 keeper sized trout per morning. When the temps are cooler a shrimp on a jighead will help with a slower bite. The key is to find deeper water that is protected from the wind.

Refish: Don't be surprised to catch a bunch of small redfish while you looking for the seatrout. The reds will hunker down in the same locations as the tout. Most of reds, unlike the trout, will be on the smaller side. We have been able to get a few keepers but only about 1 out of 5 are above the 18-inch minimum sixe limit.

Grouper: Grouper are another winter staple. They are making a good migrating inshore and almost any kind of structure is holding them. Docks, channel markers, pilings, and bridges are good spots to drop a pinfish, sardine or shrimp. If your dropping shrimp expect to catch some good sized sheephead as well.

Mixed bag: Sheepead are also making up a good portion of the mixed bag catches when not using artifical lures. Snapper, sea bass, flounder and jack crevelle are also common catches on most of the chartes this time of year.

Good Luck!

More Fishing Reports:

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
