Marco Island, Ft. Myers & Boca Grande

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon, Snook and Snapper

There are three species of fish that have been biting good in our area. Everything else has been slow. The good news is that the three give anglers of all skill levels a shot at some good fishing.

For the most skilled anglers, tarpon are still plentiful in Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound. There are also some tarpon still holding in and near Boca Grande Pass. We have been drifting live thread herring but cut mackerel, ladyfish and pinfish are been producing good results. The key has been locating the fish. The fish aren't showing very well and we have relying on previous locations and gps numbers from the prior days fishing.

For the anglers who don't want to put in the time for tarpon but want a good challenging fish, snook fishing fits the bill. Snook fishing has been excellent near the beaches and passes all summer. The only time when the fishing has been tough is when the wind has been blowing out of the west. This makes the water milky and it moves the fish off the beaches. Live pinfish, sardines and ballyhoo are great baits for fishing the passes and along the beach.

If you looking for a great meal and and some low pressure fun fishing, snapper fishing is the way to go. Snapper have onvaded our inshore waters and can be found around any structure and around the passes. The have been taking small live sardines and and pieces of cut thread herring, ladyfish and mullet.

Good Luck,

Capt. Scott Hughes

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
