Lots of Trout, Kingfish and even Tarpon!

I fished four days this past week and the fishing for trout, kingfish and tarpon was out of sight. The fishing for redfish was way off even though the tides were perfect for catching tailing redfish. I had to do alot of poling just to get a shot or two at a decent redfish after two days of only catching a few redfisha and growing tired of catching a trout and every cast I changed game plans and went to Boca Grande Pass and had a ball catching kingfish and tarpon.

We flat wore out the 15-30 pound kingfish on both the rising and falling tides in Boca Grande Pass. We drifted live thread herring along the tide rips in the two holes in Boca Grande Pass. Along with the kings was a good bunch of tarpon. We also scored on numerous tarpon from 100-150 pounds using the same stinger rigs that we were using for the mackerel. The kingfish being in Boca Grande Pass this time of year is no surprise but to have a bunch of targetable tarpon in the pass in the middle of December is almost un heard of.

As I mentioned earlier, the trout fishing is just stupid. I think that every pothole in Pine Island Sound has a trout in it right now. We have been catching as many as we want using the new Fishbites soft plastic lures. The Shrimp tails have been producing the best and last the longest on the hook. We have been able to average about a dozen trout on one plastic. With three people fishing we are averageing about 30-40 trout an hour to the boat. All trout fishing is catch and release until January 1st so after an hour or two we have heading to the pass for some real drag screaming. Unfortunately, a very hard cold front is heading in tommorrow so I'll bet that the tarpon fishing and probably the king fishing in the pass is going to be over after Mondays predicted low of 44 degrees. I guess we'll see.
