Ft. Myers - Offshore

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Time For Action

Greetings;

The best way I can describe the fishing around our area for the last two weeks in a single word would be "action". Nearly nonstop action is available right now and it's not hard to find. On a few of my charters my clients have asked to pull away or try something different just to get a rest this past week!

As with the hot late summer weather I get quite a few half day trips this time of year. Its a great way to enjoy great fishing yet avoid the afternoon thunderstorms and the big heat of the day. During this time of year a sunrise start is the norm for me, and back at the dock at noon. This plan requires that we get into some fish rather quickly. Thankfully that has been no problem lately.

Fishing mostly inside of ten miles we have found plenty of activity centered around the southern migration of Bay Anchovies (glass minnows). A multitude of predators is lurking around these bait pods. Some of the season's best tarpon action has been very steady. Loads and loads of sharks are in the mix also. Blacktips mostly, but enough big lemons and bull sharks are there to keep you rigged up with a couple of bigger rigs. Another fish hanging in with the bait and crashing the party is spanish mackerel. Many of these are running big in the four to five pound range. This fishing is great fun on a fly rod. We just drift into the bait quietly. Jacks, mackerel, sharks, ladyfish, and tarpon are all possible in the same spots.

Further offshore the hard bottom is producing some nice grouper and snapper. Goliath grouper, permit, cobia, snapper, and cudas are all biting on the towers, wrecks, and heavy structures.

It's a great time of year to be fishing guide. Yesterday's half day produced two tarpon releases, twenty-five blacktip releases, one hammerhead release, and eleven spanish mackerel in the box
