Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon Time

Fishing Report

Greetings Fishing Friends,

Recent weather patterns have made me be ready for anything. I guess I should say, "weather reports". The forecast for our area have been off the mark, and preparation for a trip based on them do not fit the program. Offshore trips have been finished in backwater areas, tarpon trips turned into snook trips, fly fishing has turned to spin several times as well. In spite of all this, the fish are biting.

Offshore there is great action over the hard bottom for grouper and snapper. Not bunches of keeper grouper, but for a family looking for solid non stop rod bending fun it can not be beat. Hundred fish days are common. Snapper are as good as ever with limits of very nice sized mangos coming over the rail when my anglers want eating fish. Cobia in the area as well as some permit. Permit have been tough, but are around. Due to sloppy sea conditions, rain and cloudy water they are hard to spot. Spanish mackerel are on the chew big time right now. In the same areas as the spanish are roving packs of huge blue runners to three pounds. We had a great time on with clousers and eight weight fly rods getting double hook ups several times with the spanish and runners. Goliath grouper are tearing up drags, and making for the picture of a lifetime for many of my anglers this summer. Its great to see these awesome fish here and ready to fight even when the weather is sporty.

Tarpon fishing has turned back on big time this week. We jumped and landed over thirty fish, most in the hundred pound range. They are feeding best on the turn of the tide, and at peak flow points. Both live bait and dead have produced for us. Even better news is that the sharks have returned with them to keep us entertained waiting for a poon to bite. We also caught our biggest snook of the year so far, a forty four inch beauty that was mixed in with the tarpon.

Good luck and good fishing,

Capt. Rick
