Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone
September 9, 2005
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Water Cools, Bait Migration Starts

Greetings,

With water temps cooling a bit bait is starting to show along the coast in numbers. This means the predators are not far behind.

Near shore there are tarpon to be found. If you are dedicated and look you will find the big ones. Lots of baby’s are near the bridges over the passes as well. Snook and some gag grouper are in the same places. If you see the birds diving then you likely have found a school of glass minnows. With them there have been lots of Spanish mackerel and some nice sized cobia.

Offshore there is also Spanish mackerel and they seem to be larger. Big structure is holding cobia and goliath grouper. We are having a ball with the big guys up past three hundred pounds. Out past seventy-five feet of water the grouper bites have been consistent. Some very nice gags are on the bigger ledges in the mid seventy-foot range along with some very respectable red grouper. The bait of choice is a big live something. We used threadfin and pinfish good results.

Watch the weather and fish you window, don’t push the limit. Lighting sucks.

Stay in the Game,

Capt. Rick
