Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 4, 2011
INSHORE - The inshore fishing this week has been good until Thursday when the wind started blowing. The water temps have warmed up and the trout action has been good in 2 to 4 feet of water at places like Herman's Bay, Middle Cove and Round Island. Live shrimp under a popping cork or a soft plastic bait in a light color has been the way to go. Look for redfish around the docks on the full tide. Try a small crab, live shrimp or a gold spoon. The catch and release snook action remains steady in the Ft. Pierce Inlet when using a live bait on the falling tide. The local bridges are holding plenty of sheepshead, black drum and sandperch. Most of the fish were caught on shrimp or clams. There are plenty of bluefish, spanish mackerel and jacks around the Ft. Pierce Inlet and they are hitting 2oz. sliver spoons. If you are surf fishing there is plenty of whiting, pompano and bluefish to keep you busy. Frozen or fresh dead shrimp are your best bet.
OFFSHORE - I have had a good many reports of cobia around the rays in 40 to 80 feet of water. Most of the cobia were caught on jigs or squid. There are still some nice kingfish in 50 feet of water and they are taking slow trolled live baits. There is also plenty of bonita and sharks all over the place. The bottom fishing remains steady over the reefs and wrecks when using cut baits. There is plenty of spanish mackerel and bluefish along the beaches.
TEEN ANGLERS - The next inshore fishing tournament for the Treasure Coast Chapter of Teen Anglers will be on Sunday - March 20th with a mandatory meeting on Saturday - March 19th. For more info call 772-201-5773 or go to the web at www.teenanglers.org
