Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Yesterday, Jan. 19th, we had the first fishing tournament for the St. Lucie County Chapter of the National Teen Anglers. After meeting at Round Island at 7:00am the teens recieved their instructions and set out for 5 hours of fishing. Upon their return their fish were weighed and they were feed lunch before the trophy presentation. 3rd place went to John Petty, 2nd place went to John Parker and 1st place and biggest fish went to Gerald Cheatam. Taylor Purcell, Jamel Mitchell, Dillon Walsh and Jacob York were also given prize packets for their efforts. I would like to thank Capt. Al Bernetti, Jim Walukiewicz, Cammie Ward and Mike Masi for all their help. If you would like more information on Teen Anglers, you can call me at 561-201-5770 or 561-461-1335. Now for my fishing report. It looks like the trout bite is the hottest thing going this week with fish being caught from Vero Beach all the way down to Jensen Beach. Your best bet is to find 3 to 5 feet of water and fish with a live shrimp or soft plastic baits.
The catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce are still the place to be if you are looking for sandperch, snapper and croakers. Fresh dead shrimp or small live shrimp are the best baits to use.
I have seen quite a few nice size flounder this past week at the Jetty of the Ft. PIerce Inlet and along the walls behind the Ft. Pierce Library with the area along the walls producing the most fish. Try a medium size live shrimp.
The catch and release snook action has also been good for anglers using live baits or feathers. The best time is still at night and at the tide change.
The surf anglers are still bringing in plenty of whiting, Spanish mackerel and a few pompano. The best baits to use for these fish has been live shrimp or sandfleas.
Until next week, good fishing.
