Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
April 4, 2002
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Flats fishing has been good all week with a good trout bite early in the morning and late on the afternoon. The only only chnage from last week is that the fish are in a little deeper water, 3 to 5 feet. Try a live shrimp or a rootbeer colored soft plastic bait. The most productive places this past week have been The Mooring in Vero Beach, Bear Point and the area around Midway Road in Ft. Pierce and the flats just north of the Jensen Beach Causeway.

If it is redfish you are looking for try the dock lines around St. Lucie Village. Use a live finger mullet if you are lucky enough to find them or a small silver dollar sized crab.

The snook have been picky this past week with only a few being caught during the daytime. But, the bite picks up at night around the area bridges for the anglers who are throwing big feathers. The Turning Basin has been producing a few small snook just before daylight and have been caught on large live shrimp. I have also seen a good number of snook on the flats this past week but they are easily spooked.

Bottom fishing from the local bridges has also been good this past week with reports of snapper, sheepshead and Spanish mackerel. Try fishing one hour before and one hour after the full tide change. I am still getting good reports of grouper along the channel edges to the north of the North Bridge in Ft. Pierce.

Good luck to the local teams fishing the Fort Pierce Kingfish Open on April 11 - 13.

Until next week, keep fishing.
