Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
August 8, 2002
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

The inshore fishing has been good with the trout bite coming in the early morning. The big fish are taking top water baits or live pigfish right at daylight. You may want to try places like the Midway Road area, Bear Point, Harbor Branch, Round Island and the Moorings. If it an afternoon bite you are looking for then try the docks just after dark and use a live shrimp.

Catch and release snook action has been good this week with fish to 29 pounds reported coming from the Turning Basin. There has also been quite a few nice fish caught around the bridges and in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. A live pinfish or a greenie has been the baits of choice for the snook. Remember to practice C.P.R. Catch - Picture - Release! Snook season will be open soon.

The snapper bite continues to be hot along the channel edges when using medium sized shrimp. There were quite a few limits of snapper being caught this past week. On three charters this week we had our limits of snapper to 2 & 1/2 pounds and trout to 5 pounds.

The tarpon bite has slowed but there are plenty of big jacks hanging around the Ft. Pierce Inlet and they will give you quite a good fight.

Until next week, keep fishing.
