Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 1, 2004
INSHORE - From the reports I have gotten this past week the best bite seems to be the black drum and croakers around the area bridges in Stuart. Also, in the same areas after dark the catch and release snook action has been good.
Anglers that have been trout fishing are reporting a pretty good bite in the deeper holes along the Intercoastal and the trout were catch and release until January 1st when trout season reopened. Most of the trout reported were in the 3 and 4 pound range.
The snook action in the Ft. Pierce Inlet has slowed down a bit but there are still a lot of big redfish. Most of these fish have been too big to keep but are a good fight anyway. I also got reports of redfish along the dock line of St. Lucie Village. Try a gold spoon or a small greenie.
The catwalks of the South Bridge has been a hot spot with plenty of sandperch, small snapper and a few keeper flounder. In the Turning Basin and the Inlet there has been plenty of bluefish, spanish mackerel, jacks and a lot of blue runners. The Sandpit has been on one day and off the next as far as the croakers go but one thing is for sure, there are plenty of big sailcats there.
OFFSHORE - The big news this past week along the Treasure Coast has been the sailfish bite. The best bite seems to be around the 200 line and fishing small ballyhoo or live bait. The charter boat The Floridian reported 21 sails released on Monday. We had several boats at the marina with 5 or more releases.
The dolphin has been scattered but lots have been caught starting in 95 to 185 feet of water. We had several come into the docks on Saturday and Sunday that were in 22 to 26 pounds. The kingfish has also been active in 70 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and also down around the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet.
The seas have made bottom fishing tough but for the anglers who were willing to work a little it paid off with a few nice snapper and grouper. try the Offshore Bar in 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and fish with live baits. Also, there are still plenty of spanish mackerel, jacks and bluefish along the area's beaches.
