Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 8, 2004
INSHORE - Looks like the pompano bite has been down around the Twenty-five Cent Bridge in Stuart with anglers taking fish to 4 pounds when using sandfleas. The trout action has been good for anglers fishing in 4 to 6 feet of water when fishing with live shrimp on the full tide. To the North has it has been the flats at the Moorings in Vero Beach, Round Island and Harbor Branch in Ft. Pierce. To the South it has been the West side of the river from Bear Point all the way down to Jensen Beach Causeway. I got an e-mail from Pat O'Hare stating that he fished around Middle Cove on Monday and picked up 9 trout from 16 to 18 inches, jacks, and ladyfish. Pat was using a black and green Clouser and fishing the top of the tide.
The catch and release snook action has been good around the area's bridges and in both the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets. Try using a big live bait and fish it on the bottom. I did get several more reports this week of redfish along the dock line at St. Lucie Village. Once again the fish were too big to keep.
Since the water has warmed up this week the snapper, sheepshead and croakers have started to feed some but are still a little slow. The flounder bite has started to pick up along the sand bars, try using a live shrimp fished on a Trol-rite hook. There are plenty of jacks and bluefish scattered spanish mackerel being reported around the area's Inlets. A small Clark spoon has been hard to beat.
There will be a Teen Anglers tournament this Sunday at Jaycee Park at 7am. The Teens will fish until noon when the weigh in will start. Trophies will be awarded after the weigh in. If you are interested in becoming a Teen Angler, go to the website at www.teenanglers.org and check it out.
OFFSHORE - The sailfish bite has slowed since last week but still a few fish being reported taking live baits around the 300 line. I did get several reports of scattered dolphin taking small ballyhoo in 180 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet.
The kingfish have been all over the Six Mile Reef according to the boats fishing out of the St. Lucie Inlet. Try slow trolling a live bait, this has been the most productive. There has been plenty of bonita, small sharks and rays cruising the same area's.
Along the beaches you will find plenty of bulefish, spanish mackerel and plenty of jacks. Just look for the birds and you will find the fish.
The Offshore Bar out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet have been holding some nice size snapper and grouper. The water temps were up and the fish were feeding.
