Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 14, 2004
INSHORE - The best inshore action this week seems to be at the area bridges. The catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce has been good for anglers looking for sandperch. Try a long shank #6 hook, a small piece of shrimp and just enough weight to hold it on the bottom. Along with the sandperch the anglers have been reporting catches of snapper, small grouper and a handful of flounder. The bridges in Stuart are also a good spot to fish with good reports of pompano, black drum and croakers. Try using small live shrimp or sandfleas. The flounder are starting to work their way into the river with some good action reported around the South Jetty and also along the wall behind the Library.
Most of the trout action has been from the Midway Road area in Ft. Pierce south to the Jensen Beach Causeway or to the north of Harbor Branch. Try a live shrimp or small greenies fished under a popping cork. Most of the trout reported were 2 to 4 pounds.
I did receive several reports of keeper size grouper coming from the channel edges to the north of the North Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Anglers were trolling a deep diving plug with chartreuse or orange being the most productive colors.
The Teen Anglers had their monthly fishing tournament last Sunday at Jaycee Park. Even with the wind and the cold temps the teens were ready to fish. Twenty-six teens fished and fished and fished. When it came time to weigh in only a few teens had a fish to weigh. In the high school division, Walter Mitchell of Westwood High School took first place. David Kanbar of Port St. Lucie High School took second and Mario Zungia of Westwood High School took third. In the middle school division we only had one fish weighed and it took first place for Richard Salamak of North Port Middle School and also biggest fish of the tournament. The next Teen Anglers tournament will be held on February 7th at Jaycee Park. If you would like more info on becoming a Teen Angler just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org
OFFSHORE - Looks like sailfish and dolphin are stealing the show with a lot of both fish reported in 100 to 200 feet of water to the north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. There were a good number of dolphin weighing 20 pounds or more being reported by anglers who were fishing for sails. There were also plenty of sailfish being reported to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet in 110 feet of water but the dolphin bite down that way has not been as strong as in the Ft. Pierce area.
I did get a few reports of cobia being caught by anglers who were fishing for snapper and grouper now that the seas have calmed down. Still plenty of kingfish in 60 to 90 feet of water all up and down the Treasure Coast with several in the 40 pound range. Almost all of the kings were caught on live baits that were slow trolled.
If it is spanish mackerel you are looking for then just look along the beach. They have been all up and down the Treasure Coast Beaches. Try a small Clark spoon on a small piece of wire leader. The hottest spot for the mack's has been at Peck's Lake. Just look for the boats and you will find the fish.
