Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 22, 2004
INSHORE - The inshore bite is still not red hot but there are reports of trout down around the power lines at the Nuclear Power Plant. The bite has been an early morning bite and a live shrimp has been producing the most fish.
All the local bridges in Vero Beach, Ft. Pierce and Stuart are holding a good number of sheepshead, sandperch, black drum and small grouper. There has been a fair snapper bite around local docks and along the channel edges of the Intercoastal. The first part of the our going tide has been the time to fish.
The flounder bite has improved over the last few days with fish to 3 pounds being reported. The spot to fish has been around the North Bridge in Ft. Pierce. The redfish have been scattered but I did get reports of some nice fish in the 18 to 22 inch range being taken around the Harbor Branch area in Ft. Pierce. The croakers and weakfish are here but are still refusing to eat very much. The bite only last about one hour if you have been at the right place at the right time.
OFFSHORE - With the ocean conditions not being the best only the bigger boats are going out but they are catching a lot of fish, mostly sailfish and dolphin. Try starting in 100 feet of water straight out of either the Ft. Pierce or St. Lucie Inlets. Anglers have been catching fish on both live baits or ballyhoo. We had one boat come into the docks on Sunday that had 12 sailfish releases. There has been plenty of good size kingfish in 60 to 80 feet of water with live blue runners or greenies taking the most fish.
Bottom fishing has been tough with the strong north tide but some boats are reporting good snapper action if you take your time to anchor right. Plenty of spanish mackerel, bluefish and big jacks cruising along the local beaches as well as in the area of the Nuclear Power Plant.
