Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
March 3, 2004
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 5, 2004

INSHORE - One thing is for sure, there has been plenty of wind this week and it has made fishing tough. But, there has been some good fish around if you could find a place out of the wind and some fairly clean water. Trout to 9 pounds were reported by anglers who were fishing the Round Island area. They were using albino colored Zoom baits and were fishing them real slow over the sand patches early in the morning. They also caught a few nice redfish along the dock lines at St. Lucie Village.

The snook have been a little picky and wanting a different bait each day, one day it's shrimp, then greenies or pinfish and then a Flair Hawk fished really slow. The area bridges have been producing most of the snook on the last part of the out going tide in Ft. Pierce and on the tide changes in Stuart. Both the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets have been active when fishing big -- live baits on the bottom. There were a lot of snook releases reported over the 34 inch slot size limit.

There has been a lot of bottom fishing action again around the bridges of the Treasure Coast. Try the Roosevelt Bridge down in Stuart or the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. The sandperch, sheepshead, black drum and a few croakers have been providing all the action and they have been caught on small live shrimp.

The pompano have been scattered but try at places like Hell's Gate, Sailfish Point Flats and around the power lines south of Ft. Pierce. Try using a small live shrimp, sandfleas or a Nylor jig. Still plenty of jacks around the Inlets and they are hitting just about everything you throw at them. Just look for the birds feeding on the small bait schools.

There has been a lot of fish reported in the surf. If you don't mind the big waves and heavy leads you have to use to keep your bait on the bottom. Sunday and Monday I got reports of good bluefish, spanish mackerel and whiting coming from south of the Nuclear Power Plant. Most fish were caught on frozen shrimp.

This Sunday, March 7th, is the monthly tournament for the St. Lucie County chapter of the National Teen Anglers. The teens will meet at Jaycee Park at 6:45am and fish from 7am until noon. They will have a weigh-in and will receive trophies for first thru third place in the middle and high school divisions. Teen Anglers is an all volunteer program and is run by donations. If you would like to make a donation to Teen Anglers or want more info on the program just go to the website at www.teenanglers.org

OFFSHORE - I have no offshore report this week due to the sea conditions. Hopefully things will laydown over the next few days and maybe we can get offshore this weekend.
