Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
December 29, 2004
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

December 30, 2004

INSHORE - There has not been a lot to talk about this past week due to the weather. But, if I had to pick one hot spot it would be the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. There have been plenty of sand perch being reported along with a mixed bag of black drum, croakers and sheepshead. Try using a small live shrimp fished on the bottom as your first choice, second try using a piece of fresh dead shrimp and last try using frozen shrimp.

The catch and release snook action has been steady for anglers fishing the area's bridges and Inlets. Try using a live bait and fish it on the bottom at the tide changes. The Turning Basin has been producing a lot of short snook. The redfish bite has almost disappeared with only a few fish being reported coming from around the North Bridge or along the dock lines of the St. Lucie Village area -- both in Ft. Pierce.

The trout are still catch and release until January 1st but, they have been all over the river. You just need to find a place out of the wind and where the water temps are several degrees above the rest of the water and you will find the trout. Just remember that the fish are cold and will be a lot slower so you will need to slow down your bait and fish deeper.

There has been a lot of croakers and weakfish have been caught in the area between the Turning Basin and Fabor Cove. All you need to do is look for the boats.

OFFSHORE - The sea conditions have been bad with all the wind out of the Northeast. It has been hard for even the big boats to get out. But, before the winds started the dolphin bite was good in 125 to 185 feet of water. The sailfish bite had picked up over the last week with a good number of fish being caught to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet in 110 feet of water. There were still a few kingfish in 60 to 80 feet of water along the beaches of the Treasure Coast.

The best bite has been the snapper and grouper while bottom fishing but, it was only when the weather would allow it.

Hopefully the weather man knows what he is talking about and we will have a great weekend of fishing.

Have a Safe and Happy New Year.
