Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 11, 2005
INSHORE - The water temps are still cold and this is making inshore fishing tough for everyone. I did have reports of some snook in the Turning Basin, around the North Bridge and in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Down around the Stuart area the St. Lucie Inlet has been holding a good number of short snook and some of the area bridges have had slot sized snook being caught. In most locations a large live shrimp or a pinfish will work the best.
The trout action is not much better but the fish that were reported were caught in the afternoon after the sun warmed up the water a little. A Cotee jig or a live shrimp have both been successful in luring these fish. There were a few redfish reported along the dock lines of St. Lucie Village and again these fish were feeding in the afternoon on live shrimp.
One thing the cold water temps hasn't hurt is the sandperch and sheepshead bite. Try fishing along the catwalks of the South Bridge for the sandperch and just about any where you can find some kind of structure for the sheepsheads. A piece of a fresh dead shrimp will work great for the sandperch and a fiddler crab for the sheepshead.
There are still a lot of croakers being caught if you happen to be in the right place when they turn on which has been for about one hour around the time the tides change.
TEEN ANGLERS - Finally after canceling the tournament twice before the Teen's got to fish this past Sunday. They did a lot of fishing and not a lot of catching due to the cold water temps. 1st place and biggest fish trophies went to Justin Rader of Ft. Pierce Central with Mark Maxwell of Westwood High taking 2nd and Chad Painter, also of Westwood taking 3rd. The teen's in the middle school division did not weigh any fish from the eligibility list. The next Teen Anglers Inshore Tournament will be Sunday, February 20th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. If you would like more info on Teen Anglers just go to the web at www.teenanglers.com
OFFSHORE - There have not been a lot of reports this week due to the sea conditions with the few reports I did get coming from the bigger boats. Everyone reported that there was plenty of bonita to keep anglers busy.
The sailfish bite seems to be to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and starting in about 90 feet of water. The dolphin have been scattered but biting good when you did locate them. A good starting place is to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and in 180 to 250 feet of water and troll a ballyhoo.
I did get some reports of kingfish in the 12 to 15 pound range in the area off the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant in about 55 to 70 feet of water while trolling a rigged ribbonfish.
Bottom fishing has been good even with the sea conditions not that good. The snapper, sea bass and a few good sized grouper have been caught in about 90 feet of water out of Ft. Pierce and along the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet.
