Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 13, 2005
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - The trout bite has been good with a lot of fish in the 2 to 4 pound range being reported. The snook fishing remains steady around the bridges for the bigger fish and on the flats for the smaller fish. If you are looking for redfish try around the spoil islands to the South but remember to fish shallow and be quite. There has been plenty of snapper and sheepshead along the channel edges. Offshore try your luck around 300 foot depth for some nice dolphin. Just find the weed lines and you will find the fish. We did have a few big cobia caught this week and also some nice sized kingfish in the 30 pound range. The kings were in 30 to 60 feet of water -- just look for the schools of bait. Also, good reports of snapper and grouper up around Bethel Shoals.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY - Most of the snook reported are being caught after dark around the North and South Bridges and in the Turning Basin. Live mullet or pinfish have been working the best. The trout action is getting better by the day with some big trout reported on the flats to the south of the South Bridge and on the West side of the river. The best time has been early morning and the most fish have been caught on top water baits. The bigger snapper are starting to move in on the channel edges. More and more reports of tarpon showing up around Big Mud Creek at first light. Offshore there has been a lot of dolphin being reported the first part of the week in 100 to 200 feet of water. Most of the dolphin were caught to the southeast of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. I did get reports of some nice cobia around the buoys. The kingfish are working their way to the beaches with several nice fish being caught in 30 feet of water on Wednesday. Still a few sailfish being reported to the South and bottom fishing remains good in 90 to 140 feet of water.
MARTIN COUNTY - Offshore look for scattered dolphin in 85 to 160 feet of water to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet. You can expect to see a few sailfish in that same area. Bottom fishing has been good along the Six Mile Reef with plenty of snapper being reported. Also a few cobia coming from that same area. Inshore the snapper are moving in along the channel edges. Also mixed in with the snapper are sheepshead, blowfish and plenty of ladyfish. Look for the snook around the bridges and along the seawalls and docks in the North Fork.
OKEECHOBEE COUNTY - Again with the water conditions improving so has the fishing in the Big O. Look for the bass around the Kings Bar, Horse Shoe Island and Harney Pond. The best bite has been about mid morning. The panfish are working their way to the beds but are feeding on the way. The Rim Canal and Monkey Box are two of the spots producing the most fish.
BRAGGING BOARD - Darrell Lankow of Port St. Lucie was fishing from his kayak in Stuart between Sand Sprint Park and the St. Lucie Inlet late last Friday afternoon when he caught a 9lb. 1oz. trout. Darrell was using a live mullet with a float.
WELCOME HOME - I would just like to take a minute to say WELCOME HOME to our son-in-law, Sgt. Jeffery Parramore. Jeff has been in Khowst, Afghanistan for the last 14 months.
