Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
August 18, 2005
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 19, 2005

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - Inshore the Sebastian Inlet has been good for catch and release snook and over sized redfish. The trout bite has been good along the grass flats between the Inlet and bridges in Vero. The snapper bite around the area's bridges has also been good for anglers using live shrimp. Still a few tarpon around the Moorings early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Offshore the best bite has been the bottom bite with snapper, grouper and cobia being the most active. Try the Bethel Shoals area and use a live bait. Plenty of kingfish action in 30 to 60 feet of water. Look for a few big tarpon along the beaches.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY - Plenty of trout and catch and release snook at first light. Try places like the Midway Road area or the flats just to the north of the North Bridge. The snapper, sheepshead and a few grouper are along the channel edges. I did a few reports of nice size pompano along the channel edges along with the big jacks and ladyfish.

Offshore there are still a lot of sailfish releases being reported to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and starting in 50 feet of water. The sails have been taking live baits. The dolphin have been scattered with only a few being reported in 300 plus feet of water. The bottom fishing has been good in 70 to 90 feet of water and to the north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The kingfish bite has been steady in 30 to 60 feet of water up and down the Treasure Coast.

MARTIN COUNTY - The inshore fishing has been good for anglers fishing to the north of the Jensen beach Causeway due to the water conditions to the South. The trout has been feeding on top water baits along the West shore at first light. Plenty of action along the channel edges with snapper, sheepshead, pompano and jacks to keep you busy. Look for a few tripletail around the channel markers to the south of the powerline's. The local bridges have been holding a good number of sheepshead, snapper and black drum.

Offshore the sailfish action has been good to the north of the St. Lucie Inlet in 50 to 90 feet of water. Still some kingfish in 20 to 40 feet of water and they have been taking live baits. The bottom fishing around the reefs and wrecks has been good when using live baits. Look for some cobia and lots of cuda's and sharks around the Six and Eight Mile Reefs.

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY - As the water clears up the bass action is getting better and better. Try using a spinner bait or a live shiner around the lilly pads. Bream fishing remains good around the river and the Rim Canal when using live crickets.

BRAGGING BOARD - Ian Reed fishing aboard the Relentless with Capt. Rob Ward caught his first sailfish on Sunday while fishing out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Ian was using live greenies for bait and the fish was caught in 50 feet of water. The sail measured 73 inches.

TEEN ANGLERS - The Teen Angler Banquet will be held on September 10, 2005 at the Pelican Yacht Club in Ft. Pierce. If you would like more info on Teen Anglers go to www.teenanglers.org
