Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
February 9, 2006
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 9, 2006

INSHORE - Fishing has been just like the weather -- good one day and bad the next. But, on the good days look for plenty of snook around the Turning Basin, both the North and South Bridges and the docks along the Ft. Pierce Inlet. For now the top two baits are select size shrimp or a Flair Hawk. If it is trout or redfish you are looking for then try the docks along the St. Lucie Village area and again try using live shrimp. The pompano have slowed down but there has still been scattered action to the South in the river. The area around the power lines has been a good place for pompano and they have been feeding on sand fleas. Just look for any kind of structure and you should find some the sheepshead -- they are all over the river. The catwalk of the South Bridge has been giving up plenty of sandperch, sheepshead and black drum. The croakers and weakfish are still a little slow but if you find the schools when they are feeding you will load up. The area around Faber Cove or the Sand Pit would be a good starting place.

OFFSHORE - The ocean hasn't been very nice so most are staying at docks. But, on the few nice days the reports of scattered dolphin in 150 to 200 feet of water. Some kings were reported in 60 to 90 feet of water and taking a rigged ribbon fish. The bottom fishing for snapper and grouper has been good up at the Northeast grounds. Along the beaches there has been plenty of spanish mackerel and bluefish. On the closer in reefs look for the weakfish, croaker, sheepshead and pompano. These fish have been feeding on live shrimp.

TEEN ANGLERS - Once again the inshore tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers was canceled due to the weather. It has been rescheduled for this Sunday, February 12th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. If you would like more info on the Teen Angler program just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org

BRAGGING BOARD - Tom Keller visiting form upstate New York has caught 3 keeper snook this week. Wayne Wilson caught 2 snook. Larry Reid reports good catches of sandperch and croakers. Wally Dressel caught a good number of sandperch and sheepshead. Cammie Ward caught 1 keeper snook and released 2 small snook.

If you would like to report a catch, call me at 772-201-5770 or e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also reach me on the web at www.captjoeward.com
