Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Feb. 24, 2006
INSHORE - The inshore fishing has been good most of the week. The trout fishing has been good when fishing the deeper cuts and holes in 4 to 6 feet of water. The trout have been taking a soft plastic bait or a live shrimp fishing under a popping cork. The snook bite has been good one day and off the next. The first part of the week my wife, Cammie, and I caught 9 in two days and all were short by a 1/2 inch but on Wednesday and Thursday my charters caught several legal size snook in the same place. The Turning Basin has been the place to fish during the day and around the North Bridge has been good at night. During the day try a pinfish or a large shrimp and at night try a Red Tail Hawk or a pinfish. The catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce has been producing a lot of sheepshead, some black drum, snapper, sandperch and a few bluefish. The area around Queen's Cove has been holding a few nice size redfish. There has been some pompano in the surf but only a few whiting.
OFFSHORE - The offshore fishing was good for a couple of days then the wind starting kicking up again. The closer reefs have been loaded with sheepshead and weakfish. Also a few good size snapper. The bluefish have been all over and so have the big jacks. There was a handful of dolphin reported in 120 to 200 feet of water and taking ballyhoo. The kings that were reported were all small. The bottom fishing for snapper and grouper has been good on the Offshore Bar. Live and cut baits have been working well. I did get one report of a 35 pound cobia caught in 90 foot of water.
BRAGGING BOARD - Carroll Quniby caught a 33 inch snook while fishing in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Owen Totman and Tom Keller caught their limit of sheepshead while fishing just offshore. Cammie Ward caught an 11 pound grey grouper while fishing in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Wayne Wilson reported a good catch of black drum and sheepshead while fishing near the Rock Pile.
