Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
March 23, 2006
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 23, 2006

INSHORE - The wind this week has made fishing tough but, the anglers that chose to fight the wind caught pretty good fish. There were a lot of trout being reported around the spoil islands and they were feeding on live shrimp. Try using a popping cork or free lining a live shrimp. The redfish have been real spooky but they can still be caught. Try the area around Round Island at mid morning and use a piece of cut bait. The snook fishing remains steady at night around the local bridges in Ft. Pierce, the Turning Basin and in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. I have seen some big snook up on the flats this week but, they are not eating much. There are still some pompano and spanish mackerel along the channel edges as well as some sheepshead and just legal size snapper. On the catwalks of the South Bridge look for plenty of sandperch, sheepshead and bluefish. I have had several reports of flounder showing up in the Turning Basin.

OFFSHORE - With the offshore conditions not being that good this week for the most part but, if you picked your days the fishing was OK. The best bite has come from the bottom fishing. Good reports of snapper and grouper coming from the reefs and wrecks. While you are bottom fishing look for a cobia or two to show up. I had reports of cobia being caught to 40 pounds this week in 80 feet of water. There are still scattered dolphin in 160 to 180 feet of water. We had one boat come in on Saturday with 5 dolphin to 22 pounds and they were caught in that same area on naked ballyhoo. We also had one boat come back with a nice size wahoo that was caught in that same area. Look for kingfish in 60 to 90 feet of water. In a little closer on the reefs in 15 to 30 feet of water the reports were of plenty of action from sheepshead, pompano, spanish mackerel and weakfish. If it is just a good fight you want then you need to try for some of the big jacks and small sharks that are at the Boils now.

SURF - The surf anglers have been reporting good catches of whiting, pompano and bluefish. Most of the fish have been caught on small pieces of fresh dead shrimp or a piece of cut bait.
