Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
June 7, 2006
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 7, 2006

INSHORE - With the closing of snook season on June 1st a lot of inshore anglers are looking for trout and redfish. The trout bite has been good from first light until about 8:00am when using top water baits and after that you will need to go to a soft plastic bait or a live shrimp fishing under a popping cork. Try the area between Bear Point and Blind Creek to the South and from Harbor Branch to the Mooring Flats to the North. The redfish have been plentiful along the docks around St. Lucie Village as well as the docks along South Indian River Drive. Small greenies or live crabs have been working well and for artificial try using a crystal minnow. The snapper are working their way from the Inlet to the channel edges with live shrimp or a small white bait working the best.

OFFSHORE - With the kingfish tournament over everyone is looking for dolphin again. The bite has been steady but scattered from 90 to 300 feet of water. Try a pink/white or a green/yellow skirted ballyhoo. The kingfish are up on the beach with reports of fish to 40 pounds on Monday and Tuesday of this week. A live blue runner or a mullet will be hard to beat. The bottom fishing for snapper and grouper has also been good around the Northeast Grounds in 80 to 90 feet of water when using live baits. Snapper to 11 pounds and grouper to 30 pounds were reported. Also, the bottom fisherman were reporting a few cobia coming up to see what was going on -- try a Cobia Slayer or a piece of squid. There has been a good number of croakers, weakfish and flounder along the beaches. Also, keep a good look out for the big tarpon that have been along the beaches.

BRAGGING BOARD - Tony Brown caught an 11 pound snapper while fishing at the Northeast Grounds.

Savannah Ward, age 6, with the help of her dad, Capt. Rob Ward, caught a mixed bag of snapper to 10 pounds, 7 pound flounder, kingfish to 20 pounds and several dolphin to 10 pounds on Sunday while fishing at the Northeast Grounds.

Dave Watson reported a dolphin that went 34 pounds and was caught out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet in 240 feet of water.
