Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

INSHORE - Look for a good trout bite on the flats just before daylight and up until about 8:00am. Try using a small top water bait like a Zara Pup or a Top Dog Jr. After 8:00am you will want to use a live pigfish or a live shrimp and fish it under a popping cork. If it is redfish you are looking for then try the docks along South Indian River Drive or at Bear point. A lot of redfish are being caught on gold spoons or a piece of cut bait. The catch and release snook action has been good in the Ft. Pierce Inlet on the out going tide when fishing with a live bait. There have been plenty of sandperch, snapper and sheepshead being reported this week around the local bridges and along the South Jetty. The tarpon are here and are around the Ft. Pierce Inlet, in the Turning Basin and along the channel edges -- both to the North and South. The tarpon are still being a little shy when it's time to eat.
OFFSHORE - There are still a lot of dolphin being caught in 75 to 105 feet of water. A trolled ballyhoo and also live baits are working well. I did get good reports of cobia from the bottom fishermen who were after the snapper and grouper. The best bite has been to the North around Bethel Shoals. On Monday I had several boats come the docks with their limit of red snapper to 8 pounds, a few grouper in the 15 to 25 pound range and cobia to 30 pounds. I did have several reports of sailfish to the south of the Power Plant. Also, plenty of kingfish, bonita, barracuda and sharks all over the area. Look for tarpon around the Ft. Pierce Inlet and along the beaches early in the morning or just before dark.
BRAGGING BOARD - Trae Sorenson -- age 14 -- from St. Petersburg, caught and released his first snook on Monday while fishing the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Trae was using a small mylar jig and caught the fish on the out going tide.
TEEN ANGLERS - The annual Teen Angler Banquet will be held on September 23, 2006, at the Pelican Yacht Club in Ft. Pierce. All trophies and awards will be given out at the banquet. The first inshore fishing tournament of the new school year will be held on September 24, 2006, at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. Please check the website for the event sign up page.
