Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report
MARCH 1, 2007
INSHORE - The inshore fishing was good this week until the wind started blowing on Wednesday and the wind made the fishing tough. I did have reports of some trout to 22 inches being caught around the Bear Point area on Monday and also some nice keeper trout coming form the Round Island area. The trout have been feeding on live shrimp. The snook bite has been up and down. The best action seems to be at the North Bridge and in the Turning Basin. Anglers that were throwing a Red Tail Hawk or using a live shrimp around the lights did the best. Find some structure and you should find plenty of sheepshead. They have been feeding on small crabs or a live shrimp. I did get several reports of some pompano down around the power lines and they were being caught on small live shrimp or a sandflea.
OFFSHORE - The offshore fishing has been good on the days you could get out. There were several big cobia reported in 40 to 60 feet of water. Most of them were caught on a feather. Move out a little and try for a king in 70 to 90 feet of water. The kings are being caught on both live and artificial baits. I did get several reports of scattered dolphin in 120 to 170 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet but most of the fish were under 15 pounds. The bottom fishing for snapper, grouper, sea bass and trigger fish has been good over the reefs in 90 foot of water. The inshore reefs are producing plenty of spanish mackerel, sheepshead, weakfish, croakers, bluefish and whiting.
TEEN ANGLERS - The monthly inshore fishing tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers was held last Sunday at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. In the middle school division 1st place went to Josh Drumm - Oslo Middle in Vero Beach for a 7lb. 2oz. redfish. 2nd place was Jason Horn of Central Middle in Melbourne with a 2lb. 11oz. sheepshead. 3rd place was John Haney also of Oslo Middle with a 2lb. 1oz. sheepshead. In the high school division 1st place went to RJ Swinford of Westwood High for his 1lb. 10oz sheepshead. 2nd place was Kalib Guettler also of Westwood for his 1lb. 3oz. trout. There was no 3rd place in the high school division. Biggest fish of the tournament went to Josh Drumm for his redfish. The next inshore tournament will be on March 18th at Jaycee Park. BRAGGING BOARD - Capt. Dave Lowe on the Trash Can III caught 3 dolphin and a wahoo last Saturday. He was using ballyhoo and caught all the fish between 50 and 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Kadri Benton caught a 63 pound cobia on Monday while fishing straight out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Kadri was using a feather and it took about 40 minutes for him to land the fish. Larry Reid caught 10 sandperch today while fishing from a dock at the Dockside Inn & Resort. He was using frozen shrimp for bait. Dave Collingwood caught several spanish mackerel while fishing in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Wally Dressel caught several black drum and a few sandperch. He was using live shrimp.
