Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
February 15, 2000
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing on theTreasure Coast this past wwek has been hit and miss for snook. The snapper, trout, sheephead and black drum bite is still going strong.

The few snook that were caught were small and skinny. I caught one while fishing on the Ft. Pierce Jetty (south side) Friday morning and it was 30 inches long and only weighed 8 & 1/2 pounds. This tells me that the snook are not feeding due to the cold water temperatures. On two charters this week we had our limit of snook while fishing at the Turning Basin. The snook were legal but small. We were using pinfush as bait. The south jetty is about the only other spot producing snook. The bait to use there was large live shrimp.

The trout were on the flats at Harbor Branch and at Big Mud and Little Mud creeks. Live shrimp and a popping cork worked best up until about 9:00am then we switched to rubber baits.

The snapper are still biting at the docks of the City Marina and behind the library along the sea wall. The sheephead are just about everywhere in the river with fish as big as 5 & 1/2 pounds.

The surf around Ocean Village has been producing some nice bluefish and whiting. There were also reports of bluefish being caught on the North beach around the Pepper Park area.

Until next week, Good fishing
