Haulover Inlet - Saltwater Fishing Report
We finally got past the hot summer and are into fall. You wouldn't know it if you walked outside but for some reason the fish can tell. Fall is the best time of year for swordfishing in the gulf stream and wahoo in the Bahamas. The seas are usually calm which give us a lot of options to target a variety of fish.
September was good fishing this year but there were not a lot of charters. I managed to get out some but not as much as anticipated. The few trips I did get out we managed to catch some nice fish.
I only got to swordfish three times this month but were successful two out of the three trips. There were some very good swordfish catches this month both in the day and at night. The night fishing has made a nice comeback this year opposed to the past years. The Miami swordfish tournament was held last weekend and surprisingly there were a nice body of fish that moved in. The heaviest sword of the tournament was 440lbs followed by a 350, 230, and a 135. There were only thirteen boats fishing and almost every boat I spoke with had good action.
The dolphin finally showed up in good numbers and the sizes are in the 5-12lb range. These fish are a blast to catch on light tackle. The dolphin also called mahi mahi are known for there acrobatic jumps and fast runs. They have beautiful colors of blue, green, gold, and turquoise and make a fabulous trophy. If you can find something floating this time of year, you are almost guaranteed good sized dolphin and wahoo are lurking under it.
The shallow reefs have been producing good amounts of kingfish, bonitas, and your occasional big wahoo. The deeper wrecks and ledges have been holding groupers, snappers, porgies and gray tilefish.
If you are looking to go fishing the next couple months I would recommend the mahi/swordfish trip or heading across to the Bahamas for wahoo.
