Haulover Inlet - Saltwater Fishing Report
Happy New Year to all. Fishing has been getting better over the past weeks both inshore and offshore.
Starting with the inshore, there have been a big school of tarpon traveling up and down the beach. They have been biting in the daytime as well as the nighttime. I have heard of some shrimp starting to move which should get better after the cold front blows through. When the shrimp start running hard the tarpon will be feeding aggressively, having opportunities at multiple fish night. While fishing on the beach for tarpon we have also been catching mutton snapper, Spanish mackerel, blue runners, and jack crevalle. Biscayne Bay has been producing mangrove snappers, jack crevalle, tarpon, ladyfish and the occasional snook.
Offshore fishing has picked up over the past week and should get better after the cold front pushes the migrators down south to the warmer water. We have been catching sailfish regularly while kite fishing the reef with live thread herring and goggle eyes. Small bonitas have been working well for us too. There have also been some big kingfish mixed in with the sailfish in 100-150 ft of water.
Bottom fishing has been producing amberjacks, mutton snapper, black grouper, sharks, and barracudas. Most of the bottom fish have been eating live bait and vertical jigs.
A friend of mine on the Therapy IV caught a 500 lb. mako shark which ate his amberjack on a deep ship wreck two days ago.
