Haulover Inlet - Saltwater Fishing Report
We are now in peak season for sport fishing Miami. April and May are by far the best months of the year to fish in South Florida. Whether it be fishing the bay for tarpon, jacks, and snook or offshore fishing for big sailfish, sharks, and swordfish, we are fortunate to have it all right in our back yard. April has been a great month this year. The fishing couldn't be any better.
Biscayne Bay has been producing a multitude of jacks, trout, snook, barracudas, and tarpon. I would recommend this trip if you enjoy sightseeing, swimming, and gazing at the beautiful downtown Miami skyline. This time of year we also offer an evening and night trip for the elusive snook in Haulover and Govt. Cut. Snook come into the inlet's every year at this time to spawn. It is not uncommon to catch 15 or 20 of these fish in one night. These game fish can weigh up to 40 lbs. What a blast on light tackle! Night time snook fishing is great for beginners and professionals.
Offshore fishing has been red hot over the past two weeks. Bait has been good which makes our lives so much easier! I feel extremely confident that we are going to have a good trip when the live wells are full of bait. Chumming the water with live bait is similar to ringing the dinner bell for the predators in the deep blue.
There have been giant schools of bonitas around which is a great sign that the blackfins are not far behind. Every year in May we get a big push of Blackfin tunas which average 25-35lbs. These fish are a blast to catch on light tackle. Tunas prefer to feed in low light. They tend to feed better early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Cobia fishing has been excellent over the past week. I have caught over 30 cobias in five trips. Most of the cobia have been on the bottom or following bull sharks. They follow the bull sharks as scavengers eating whatever these apex predators do not finish. Mark the shark caught a bull shark the other day that had over fifty cobias with it. Five local charter boats limited out off of the shark.
Grouper season will be open on May 1. I have been catching throw back groupers by accident over the past couple weeks. This is a great sign and the closure is really helping the progress of these great eating fish. I have several trips this week and am looking forward to targeting them.
May is starting to fill up fast. Like I stated earlier it is the peak month in Miami. If you like good rod bending action, and great fun, now is the time to wet your line. I look forward to fishing with you.
