Crazy Fishing Action

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Great Spring Fishing Action

Capt. Josh Fritz

Spring fishing is in full swing along the Nature Coast of Florida. Red fish and snook are taking over the back waters of Aripeka to Chassahowitzka, look around outside points, creek mouths, and mangrove shorelines. A incoming tide is producing the best action, live bait is the way to go for these hungry fish, I like to use green backs AKA white bait. Rig up a 25 to 30 pound leader with a 2/0 circle hook and you are ready. Hook the bait in the nose and trim the tail to prevent the bait from swimming out of the strike zone. Red fish are running from 16 to 30 inches and snook from 20 to 35 inches.

Trout are on the shallow grass flats 1 to 5 feet of water, popping corks, mirrodines 17mr and white zoom flukes are trout lures. Live bait is great as well, pin fish and green backs free lined or under a cork cast up current and let it float down. Drifting is a good way to cover ground when you catch a trout put the anchor out to fish that area. Most trout are 16 to 26 inches.

Mackerel and cobia are here on the deeper flats 6 to 12 feet on spotty bottom. Use a chum bag to attract the macks and cobia also look around structure for cobia such as rang markers, tri pods, channel markers, crab traps, rocks, and reefs. Make sure you have a stout rod ready with a live pin fish or green back.

Stop into Precision Tackle located in Spring Hill FL in the Well care plaza on U.S. HWY19. Tell Dave that I sent you.
