Fall Fishing Report

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

Capt. Josh Fritz

Fall fishing patterns are taking place right now with the cooling of the Gulf waters. Trout action is very good in the shallow grass flats in 1 to 3 feet of water. Look for grass with sand holes, kelp grass aka rock grass, and oyster bars. Lures are the best way to locate trout. Top water lure and subsurface lures are all great for a search bait. My go to search bait lure is a Mirr O Dine 17 MR in the 808 color. Start in a area with good bottom make long cast to cover ground and when you catch or get a hit from a trout anchor the boat to fish that area. Popping corks rigged with a 1/8 ounce jig head and a gulp shrimp is deadly to a gator trout.

Red fish are hanging around in side bays and rocky shorelines with the massive mullet schools. Live jumbo shrimp or pin fish for bait is the way to go. For lures a gulp shrimp rigged weedless or on a light weight jig head is great. Gold spoons, top water plugs and mirr o dines are all great for reds.

The shallow water grouper action is on FIRE right now in 8 to 12 feet of water, target rock piles, sea fans with rocks, and patch reefs for these big boys. I cast and troll big diving rapala plugs in the white and red head color, mullet, and red and orange color. We are catching gag grouper from 21 to 32 inches on ever trip out.
