Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Chase N' Tails Fishing Charters - Hernando Beach Fishing Report
The inshore waters of Hernando are holding an abundance of fish to be caught. Trout continue to produce every day we are having our best luck with top water lures such as the skitter walks (sw08), spook jrs, and at high noon I switch over to a suspending lure like a mirr o lure. The mirr o dine 17MR in the 808 color is very good or a white jerk bait rig weed less or on a 1/8oz jig head, live shrimp or pin fish under a pooping cork also works great. Look for trout in 1 to 4 feet around grassy bottom,& oyster bars. Most of the trout are 16 to 23 inches long with a few gator trout up to 28 inches has been caught in the past 2 weeks.
Red fish are making their way into the back bays and coves, make sure you look for the key signs mullet schools, rocky/oyster beds, good moving water. The same lures I mention above also works very good for red fish, what I like to do is use the trolling motor at a slow speed and work the shore lines until I find a school of reds, then I anchor the boat and work that area with both lures and bait. I have been finding the best bait right now is pin fish, and fresh cut mullet. When using bait you want to match the hook size to the bait you are using so if you are using a 3 to 4 inch pin fish I would use a 3/0 to 4/0 circle hook. A good way to fish with pin fish is to cut the tail off and place the hook through the tail end so that you have the head of the bait facing out for a good long cast. Cut mullet is probably the main bait of choice for most anglers fishing for red fish. What I do is cast net some fresh mullet then I will chunk them up in ½ inch chunks and with a 3/0 circle hook place the hook into the top of the mullet chunk going through the back bone for a good hold. Most of the red fish are 20 to 27 inches.
Sheep head and black drum are showing up in good numbers. Look for structure for them around sea walls, springs, rocks, oyster beds, deep holes, and docks. When you find them the best way to fish for these guys is with live shrimp. I use a 1/0 J hook a small piece of shrimp and a spilt shoot to get it to the bottom. Also chum the water with small pieces of shrimp to get the bite going.
Fishing is great stop into your local tackle shop Precision Tackle in Spring Hill in the Well Care plaza and see Dave the owner he will show you very thing I mention about lures and bait. Book a trip and lets catch some fish.
