Hernando Beach Inshore Report

Capt. Josh Fritz

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well for the last week we been having some very nice weather for fishing, highs in the upper 70's and flat calm seas has made for some great fishing action. Black drum, trout, and red fish are all chewing very good I will start with black drum. When trying to find black drum spots you want to look for deep holes, springs, and muddy bottom. On my recent trips this week I have been finding the best action for drum in deep holes and springs. The way I fish for the drum is with a 2/0 circle hook and live shrimp free lined. Anchor up current and take some frozen shrimp pinch the shrimp into pieces and chum the hole up this will get the bite going. Take your live shrimp pinch the tail off and hook the shrimp through the tail end, toss the shrimp into the hole and keep a tight line make sure you let the shrimp go all the way to the bottom and hang on.

Trout are in pot holes, and close to near by springs. Live shrimp on a popping Cork is the way to go, for the lure fisherman's Mirr O Lure Lil Jon's in the glow, watermelon red, and gold color are producing quality trout. Top water lures such as skitterwalks and spook jr are also very good for trout just work the lure at a slower pace with a pause every now and then during the retrieve.

Red fish are starting to school up in larger schools, during my last few charters I have been seeing schools of reds from 12 to 20 fish per school. Size range of the reds are 16 to 28". Live shrimp and pin fish is the ticket. Look for the mullet schools and rocky/oyster bottom.
